Elephant Appreciation Day
Coming up September 22 is the annual Elephant Appreciation Day. Don't be left out of the excitement. Here is a list of some of our favorite books about and/or starring elephants, so you can be sure to have them on hand for the occasion!
“Stand Back,” Said the Elephant, “I'm Going to Sneeze!” by Patricia Thomas – a hilarious tale suitable for any audience.
The Saggy Baggy Elephant (Little Golden Book) by K. Jackson – a childhood favorite!
Elephants Can Paint Too! by Anne Schwartz – amazing true story of elephant artists! This was so inspiring to my little artists!
Emma Kate by Patricia Polacco – a fun tale with a surprise ending about a girl and her best friend, the elephant.
Horton Hears a Who! by Dr. Seuss – a classic with a real-life message that “a person is a person no matter how small.”
The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff – another childhood favorite about the young elephant who becomes king and rules his people with the help of an old, but wise, woman.
Dumbo (Little Golden Book) by RH Disney – The first one who stole me heart! A lovely story about the power of friendship and encouragement. We all have special talents. Sometimes it takes a friend to help us find it.
Uncle Elephant by Arnold Lobel – a charming and lesser-known story by Arnold Lobel. Level 2 reader.
Why do Elephants Need the Sun? by Robert E. Wells – Full of science facts made fun, Robert Wells uses an elephant in this book. Love his science books!
Oliver by Sid Hoff – a fun story. Oliver is everyone's favorite playmate. Level 1 reader.
My Cat, The Silliest Cat in the World by Gilles Bachelet – obviously not a cat, the author's comparisons in illustrations are hilarious. A great way to introduce a compare/contrast assignment.
Saving Lily by Peg Kehret – Fighting for animal rights, 2 young students stand up against their class and the planned field trip to the circus. Makes a great read aloud!
The Cowboy and His Elephant: The Story of a Remarkable Friendship by Malcolm Macpherson – for your older readers, or assigned high school reading. A delightful and true story of a man and his elephant best friend.
An Elephant's Life : an Intimate Portrait from Africa by Caitlin O'Connell – beautiful photos!
