In the current American political arena, there is much talk about the presidency. Never in history has there been such a heated election and polarization of parties. This is an ideal time for your homeschool children to study a unit on the Presidents of the United States.
Presidents of the United States Unit Study (Review)
Katie Hornor is the creator of Presidents of the United States, Video-Based Unit Study. She asked me to review it. As an educator by trade, she knew I would give her an honest review of the curriculum.
About the Unit:
The Presidents of the United States, Video-Based Unit Study is a PDF download. It includes 77 pages and 9 weeks of US Presidential unit study information spanning 230 years of United States history.
The bulk of the information is presented in short video clips, ideal for the visual learner, with suggested booklists and activities to go along with the biographical/historical study of the President and the events of his term in office.
It is a US history/geography unit study flexible enough to enhance your present curriculum, but also comprehensive enough to choose as your main educational source for history for nine weeks. It could also be used once a week for the entire year.
There is a Presidential biography study for each president in chronological order. Each study includes a video segment, books to read, and other items including virtual field trips, crafts, printables, map skills, songs, and more.
The study includes a variety of forms for book reports, maps, biography and field trips.
It is set up to be used with early elementary to secondary students depending which activities you select with the unit.
What's great is that each purchaser is granted permission to make unlimited copies of the study for their immediate family personal use. You could use this again and again with your family throughout the years!
The cost of the entire unit is $27.00.
What to Expect:
Here’s a list of some of the resources you can expect for each president:
- 1-3 Short fact-filled video clips for each president
- A recommended book list for each president, as well as presidents, first ladies and audio books; marked as picture books, chapter books or young adult+ novels
- Inclusion ideas for other subject areas such as geography and art
- Virtual Field Trip links
- Vocabulary Lists
- Reproducible Notebook pages
- Recommended resources, Printables lists, and more!
Plan In Advance:
You will want to look over the book lists in advance and purchase some or get them from your local library. You do not need to read ALL of the books but may choose the ones you wish or that are available.
If using with younger children or varying abilities, you may wish to read a chapter or part of one read-aloud book daily with your child/children. Then assign independent reading for the week on one president or several for the older kids based on the child’s abilities.
My Thoughts:
I found this unit study to be very comprehensive and great for students of all ages and learning styles. A wide variety of activities are included with each study and are sure to keep learners actively engaged.
I loved the fact that it could be used with so many age groups. I was impressed with all the activities listed so you would not need to spend time researching and finding them.
The Presidents of the United States, Video-Based Unit Study gets a thumbs up from me.
