The old hymns hold such meaning and theology. We've begun singing them in preparation for Resurrection Sunday (March 27, 2016). I never tire of hearing them, and never fail to feel a triumphant stirring in my soul at the refrain “Halelujah! Christ arose!”
I imagine Robert Lowry (1826-1899) sitting at a crude wooden desk, the window before him open to the first rays of the sun's greeting on a cool, misty, Spring morning. I imagine his Bible laying open to the Gospels and tears pouring down his face as he scribbles out the pain and joy of the words that have become such a treasure to succeeding generations:
Low in the grave He lay—
Jesus my Savior!
Waiting the coming day—
Jesus my Lord!Vainly they watch His bed—
Jesus, my Savior!
Vainly they seal the dead—
Jesus my Lord!Death cannot keep his prey—
Jesus, my Savior!
He tore the bars away—
Jesus my Lord!Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!
