We started back to school two weeks ago, but some schools where we live just started this week and some of our readers won't go back to school until September. But regardless of when you start I know it's on all of our minds and shopping lists. The school supplies: new pencils, notebooks, markers and crayons. The new lunch boxes, backpacks, uniforms, tennis shoes and laptops…
In all of your preparations though, don't forget to take some time to talk to your kids about their fears, goals and expectations for this year. And while you're doing that maybe read a book or two about going back to school. Here are some of our favorite back to school picture book titles and if you have others, please share them at the end of the post. We love to find new books! And if you need a Reading Log to record your books on this year, you can download a FREE printable bi-lingual book log here.
First Day Jitters by Julie Danneburg – a hilarious tale of unfounded fears.
It's Back to School We Go!: First Day Stories from Around the World by Ellen Jackson – opening up your little one's world to what it's like for boys and girls of other countries and cultures to go to school
Curious George's First Day of School by H.A. Rey – as usual he gets into and out of trouble.
How Will I Get to School This Year by Jerry Pallotta – a great one for talking about transportation to and from school (or the “school area”) if you homeschool. First Day of School by Mercer Mayer – Always a day filled with surprises with Little Critter.
The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi – A little girl learns that her own name is special as her classmates show her acceptance
Chu's First Day of School by Neil Gaiman – cute story of a Panda's first day of school
The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn – one of my absolute favorites!
How Do Dinosaurs Go To School? by Jane Yolen – This one has some hilarious illustrations. The sheer size of the dinosaurs makes everything they do larger than life.
Froggy Goes to School by Jonathan London – A great read aloud.
Last week's favorite post in Children's Literature Resources was
Character Building Book Resources for Boys by Deep Roots at Home
