Today's post is an update on our progress with the Bright Ideas Press Earth and Space Science this year. Well, actually this is something we did in Unit 2, Lesson 5 all about Volcanoes!
When I introduced the lesson the kids eyes got big – volcanoes are so intriguing! But then I told them we were going to simulate (re-create) a volcanic eruption, and they were really excited!
We didn't go to all the trouble of building a clay volcano around our plastic bottle. Per the kids, that takes too long. So we got right to the eruption part that shows a similar example of what happens to create gas and pressure that pushes the melted rock from deep in the earth up the vents and out of the earth's surface, making volcanoes.
The first time we didn't get the baking soda and water mixed well enough, so it was just a few bubbles instead of an eruption, but the second time we got it right. Thankfully, Hero was here that day to help catch the whole thing on video. You can see how impressed they all were on the short video below.
Visit Bright Ideas Press if you're looking for something fun and interactive to do with your kids. We are loving it!
