Using free apps to learn German is a great way to learn this very popular language. German is generally a little harder for English speaking people to learn than other languages because of grammatical differences, but it is possible to learn. German Learning for Kids app is a fun way to introduce German to your kids. They can color pictures, play games, and solve puzzles all while learning German vocabulary. Some of the sections are locked in the free version.
2. Princesses Learn German
If you have a little princes who is looking to learn German, this is the perfect app. Listen and read along to a Princess story with German words sprinkled throughout. Play games, color pictures, and sing a song all while learning. The Snow White book is free. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast are available for $1.99 each. This is a great way to get your child interested in learning.
3. Learn German From Scratch
Learn German vocabulary with this easy to use app. There are over twenty sections. Each section has a study list and quizzes. It shows the words in English and German and gives the German pronunciation.
4. Learn German With WordPic
If you only have a few minutes to practice a new language, this is your best bet. This app shows you a picture and a few words, your job is to pick the German word that matches the picture. When you pick the wrong answer, the word disappears. You can learn German by using the process of elimination. The words come up again and again helping you to learn the language. You can practice the language by using it for just a few minutes a day.
5. Learn German Pro Phrase Book
This app is part of Amazon's Underground, that means it is completely free, but only available on android. Pick from all kinds of categories to learn exactly what you want to. There are numerous words in each category. You can listen to and read the words in German. It would be the perfect app if you are learning German for a trip to Germany. There are even a few tips about traveling to Germany.
6. Learn German 6000 Words
Make learning a game with this app. There are seven different games that you can play to help you learn the German language. You can pick between three levels of difficulty to help you learn. You can pick from dozens of categories to personalize your learning. This one would be fun for both kids and adults.
7. Learn German for Beginners
This app has 21 different classes to help you learn German. Learn basics like; numbers, the alphabet, common words, and fruits and vegetables. Learn even more topics like; measurements, plants, and holidays. You will learn a lot by listening to the vocabulary words and taking quizzes.
8. Duolingo
This is by far the most complete language learning app. It is a full learning program that has you reading, speaking, and typing in German in just a few lessons. It can be used on the tablet, or on the computer.

We have had Princesses Learn German for a couple of years. My 9, 6, and 5 year old girls love it. My now-11 year old boy wished they had a boy version when we first found it. My girls would like more stories. I am amazed by how much they’ve learned and retained!
