Columbus Day is a US federal holiday celebrated every second Monday in October.
Columbus Day Educational Books & Resources
Christopher Columbus sailed across the ocean with three ships: the Niña, Pinta, and the Santa María. He is credited with being the first to land in America.
We celebrate Columbus for discovering America, for his bravery and for his perseverance. He made great discoveries in the name of Spain and Portugal, but he was also blinded by his love of gold, which caused him and his men, in the end, to take advantage of the native peoples of the Bahamas.
Columbus Day is an opportunity for us to teach our children that personal character far outweighs professional accomplishments in life. There is true gold to be discovered still in the Golden Rule: Do to others as you would have them do to you.
