What are blessing sacks?
This post is part of our Kids Doing Ministry Series.
Blessing Sacks are just that. Sacks full of something that others would find a blessing to receive. This is a great way to teach compassion and evangelism to kids!
Recently our family and some friends of ours decided we wanted to do something different on New Years Eve. We wanted to make an impact for eternity on the lives of some of the homeless or destitute in our area.
We put together +/-60 blessing sacks, filling them with yummy sandwiches, a juice drink, a piece of fruit, a napkin, Gospel tracts and an invitation to our church. The kids wouldn’t let us forget to include some candies!
Everyone helped! The older kids helped build the sandwiches, Daddy printed and folded tracts, Mommy and the little ones packed the bags.
Then when others we just joining family members for dinner and the New Years celebration, we all piled in the car and went in search of those needing a blessing.
We handed out blessing sacks to the homeless in the downtown parks, outside of shopping centers, and to those washing car windows at the traffic lights.
We drove around blessing those we found until the last sack had been given away.
Interestingly, the largest impact may have been on our children. They talked about this for days, and whenever we see a homeless person now, they are much more aware of the person and their needs. Their compassion has been awakened.
This was such a great experience for us, we are planning to do it again every year, maybe even several times a year!
Who could you bless with a blessing sack?
